Schwa Day

Yesterday, in celebration of National Schwa Day, LMS students in Ms. Jamie Edwards’ classes explored the unique role of the schwa sound in our language. Students learned that the schwa is the most common vowel sound in English, known for its relaxed, “unstressed” pronunciation—often heard in words like about, sofa, and banana. As they discovered this, students jokingly shared, “We want to be a schwa because it is never stressed!” To deepen their understanding, classes read a book about the schwa sound and participated in engaging activities where they identified and practiced words containing the schwa phoneme. It was a fun and meaningful way to build phonics skills while celebrating the quirks of the English language!
