Turgor Pressure

LMS students in Mrs. Oliva Magee's Science class were caught in a science lab testing Turgor Pressure in plants (potatoes). They used three different solutions: one of just water, one of 4% salt water, and one of 20% salt water. They could see what happened to the plant cell's turgor pressure after being submerged for 20 minutes. The goal was that in the water solution the potato continued to be stiff, that in the 4% salt water would bend some, and that the 20% solution would bend basically all the way without breaking. This experiment showed the students that the salt dehydrated the plant cells and wilted the potato on the inside without it being wilted on the outside! What a great lesson Mrs. Magee! We appreciate your enthusiasm in the science lab!
